The Challenge

Bankless — one of the most recognised names in Web3 media — had a striking gap between brand authority and organic search performance. Despite a backlink profile comparable to competitors driving substantially more traffic, Bankless had the lowest organic traffic across every competitor category.

Over 90% of organic traffic came from branded keywords, leaving the site almost entirely invisible for non-branded searches. Site health sat at 59% against a top-10% benchmark of 92%. 80% of all traffic came from just 18 URLs out of thousands of published pages. And with over 7,000 critical technical errors, the infrastructure wasn’t in a position to support growth even if the keyword strategy had been in place.

The brief: conduct a full SEO audit and strategy snapshot — identifying exactly what was holding back one of crypto’s biggest content publishers, and mapping out a prioritised path to fix it.

The Approach

The engagement covered five core areas across a full discovery and analysis phase:

Technical audit — A site health review surfaced over 7,000 critical errors including 180 HTTP links, 177 broken internal links, 1,141 duplicate title tags, 780 duplicate content pages, and a Ghost subdomain leaking 6,003 internal links. The sitemap contained 51 no-index URLs, and 18 URLs returning 404 errors collectively held 3,598 backlinks — all losing link equity.

Internal linking analysis — 88% of internal links pointed to just 29% of pages, concentrating equity in the wrong places across a site with 2,637 published articles.

Hierarchy and taxonomy — No category URLs, no content hubs, no tag structure. Articles were organised only by date and content type, making it nearly impossible for Google to understand topical authority across the site.

E-E-A-T and schema — Author bios lacked credentials, affiliations, and structured data. The company Knowledge Panel description was unfilled. Author schema was mapped and recommended for key contributors including co-founders.

Keyword and competitor strategy — Benchmarked against Blockworks, Messari, and Airdrops.io. 401 Featured Snippet opportunities were identified. Programmatic SEO potential was mapped across templates including [coin] vs [coin], best [coin] [modifier], and country-specific guides.

A full SEO roadmap was delivered across four phases: Foundations, Optimise, Build, and Shine.

Results

1,590% Total Traffic Growth Potential Mapped

Scenario 3 modelling — targeting competitor keywords and new seed topics — projected 1,590% growth in monthly organic traffic over 12 months. That represented 123,703 additional organic leads and an estimated $700,000 increase in revenue.

1,482% Growth from New Keywords Alone

Even without competitor keyword overlap, pursuing net-new keyword opportunities alongside basic on-page improvements was projected to deliver 1,482% growth — making content expansion the single biggest lever available to the team.

401 Featured Snippet Opportunities Identified

A structured SERP analysis surfaced 401 Featured Snippet opportunities where existing Bankless content could be repositioned to appear in position zero — a channel almost entirely untapped at the time of the audit.

Conclusion & Learnings

Bankless had the brand, the backlinks, and the content volume. What it lacked was the technical foundation and keyword infrastructure to convert any of that into organic visibility. The audit gave the team a clear, prioritised roadmap: fix the critical errors first, consolidate existing rankings, then build topical authority through programmatic content and taxonomy-led internal linking.

The core finding applies to many established Web3 media brands: 90%+ branded traffic is a vulnerability, not a success metric. Organic growth at scale means being found by people who don’t yet know your name.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is a discovery and analysis engagement that audits technical health, keyword positioning, competitor landscape, and content strategy — then delivers a prioritised roadmap for organic growth. It is typically the first step before any ongoing SEO engagement.

Backlinks build authority, but authority only converts to traffic when combined with strong on-page optimisation, correct indexing, and a non-branded keyword strategy. Bankless had the authority but not the infrastructure to capitalise on it.

What does 90%+ branded traffic actually mean?

Programmatic SEO uses templates to create large numbers of optimised pages targeting long-tail keyword patterns at scale — for example “best Ethereum wallet” or “Solana vs Avalanche.” For a publisher with thousands of articles, it is a way to systematically capture search demand across an entire vertical.

Phase 1 (Foundations) — fix critical errors, implement content briefs for top commercial pages. Phase 2 (Optimise) — improve existing rankings, target Featured Snippets. Phase 3 (Build) — create new topical content hubs and programmatic pages. Phase 4 (Shine) — backlink acquisition and digital PR.
